Freshmen year we call go into college with our tails between our legs and lowkey we are super nervous about everything and how its going to go. However when we got to this class right away I could tell that this was going to be the place to let your hair now. Personally Ive never like English, I thought it was a waste of a class for two main reasons. For one, I know how to speak english already, and for two, Why do we have a class where we just read. It was kind of stupid to me, but hey I don't make the rules I just have to follow them. It was great coming to this class and right away feeling welcomed. I loved it becuase everyone there was in the same boat. Everyone was new to the expereience and everyone was a little nervous. Right away we all warmed up to each other simply because our amazing teacher made it so easy for us to feel welcomed.
The work in this class has been more then interesting. I feel as if we have spoken on all the crazy things that are possible to talk about. I love that fact that we are able to debate all of our beliefs then at the end of class walk away smiling and laughing about all the craziness that just happened. The conversations that we have are so interesting. They really do bring out an amazing class, because we get to see how people really feel about certain problems. Its so interesting and it also helps us to know each other better! The peer editing that we do actually helps me, im not completely sure about the others because im not them, BUT it helps me becuase I get feedback from everyone! This is a great class and I will always recommend it to everyone I know that has to take it! Thanks Liz and everyone for making me actually like an english class!
Yes! I remember our first class which was only my second class of college ever and thinking like “O man another English class.” I actually chose it right away with the thought of just wanting to get it over with. I’ve always liked reading and writing but it always seemed teachers had managed to make it so dull and nobody ever talked. This class has been the total opposite! I look forward to it and everyone’s insights and perspectives. You’re right that, one special thing is that we do always laugh together a lot and that has made it super enjoyable and different from other classes I’ve been in, English class or any other subject.
ReplyDeleteI have never really enjoyed English classes as well but they have turned out to be important for me because they have showed me how to be a well off writer but also how to be professional in my writing when necessary. I think it’s cool how welcoming everyone was in the beginning of this class because it made that first day that much easier. It is awesome how we can all have such different opinions but once the class is over we forget about what other people think and move on with our lives.
ReplyDeleteI find this all very relatable. The first little bit of college, I was totally tail between my legs terrified. But I'm glad we've all come out of our shells and got to know one another. I love the fact you point out how angry everyone can get in our discussions, yet walk away with a smile. I've noticed it too, and I love that! It's so awesome how 10 minutes after death glaring at each other over any political topic, we can walk away laughing about it! Great post!
ReplyDeleteI agree so much. It has been extremely uncomfortable going into a new environment even though it is the glorious thing called "college". This class has given me a place where I can feel safe and accepted to be myself, and I feel like everyone got that memo. Everyone seems to participate and crack jokes left and right, making it one of the funnest classes to go to ever. The point of english classes in the traditional way of just reading and grammar and evaluating text, is incredibly boring and always an irritating amount of work. No kid our age is thrilled to go to a class like that. But I think, this is how all english classes should be ran. Social and moral debates, personal essays, and learning more about our culture and where we came from. English class should be a place like ours and it's a shame most aren't ran like how Ms.Chereskin does it.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way! This class is full of so many open people which is something you defiantly want as a freshman. We haven’t seen anyone, so far and hopefully not too soon, that just completely shuts another person down. True we have people with exploding personalities that like to make sure their opinion is heard (wink wink) but still everyone keeps it very civil and listens to what other people want to say. I think that’s one of the reasons this class is great! Everyone is so welcoming and really voices their different opinions as you stated.
